Desk, slant-front. Eastern Virginia, probably Richmond, based on Williamsburg prototype. Chippendale slant-front desk with bracket feet. Slant front with side supporting pulls. Four drawers underneath desk compartment. Pierced Chippendale style pulls, brass gallery added later. Interior contains seven small drawers under seven pigeon holes. Walnut wood, yellow pine secondary on case and case drawers, white oak sides and bottoms of interior drawers. Brass pulls on the drawers. Dates between 1780 -1805. Desk was conserved in 2001. The desk was given to the present donor by the family of Marshall Gilliam, and was identified by the Gilliams as a desk which originally belonged to Chief Justice John Marshall.
